Cleaning your aquarium Pt 1
Keeping your aquarium clean is an important part of keeping fish. It ensures a suitable environment for the fish to be kept in and it gives a beautiful piece in your lounge or chosen area for you to relax and watch.
The following will show you the simple steps required to keep your aquarium clean and healthy. This will help to ensure you get the most from your aquarium and your fish remain trouble free.
Maintenance should be carried out at regular intervals. Once a week is suitable for most aquariums and if weekly maintenance is kept up then small amounts of cleaning are required. If aquariums are left for longer periods maintenance will be increased to achieve the same results.
Firstly turn off your aquarium heater, this will prevent the heater being damaged if the water level drops below the minimum level indicated on the heater.
Remove 10% of the water from the tank and keep some to one side in a bowl, the rest can be disposed of. Use an algae cleaner to remove algae and other dirt from the glass of the aquarium. These are available either as a pad or a blade. The blades are more effective on more difficult green algae. Remember some algae and algae in the initial state of development may not be easy to see to the naked eye and therefore it is recommended that all the glass surfaces are cleaned even if they appear to be clear of algae.
