Cleaning your aquarium Pt 2
If you have artificial plants these should be removed and cleaned. You may use ordinary tap water to do this as tap water will clean the plants better and will not get into the tank in any quantity to do harm to the aquarium filter of fish. Also remove and clean any other artificial aquarium décor (i.e. rocks, etc) and clean these in the same way.
Real plants should not be removed from the aquarium as this may damage them. Trim real plant if required but it is recommended to do nothing further.
Once the aquarium décor and plants have been cleaned, trimmed and replaced remove the filter from the aquarium and gently clean the filters media in the aquarium water you kept before. Do not use tap water under any circumstances as this will damage the filter and can have disastrous consequences to the fish in your aquarium. Clean the filters impellor (the spinning piece) to ensure it is free from obstruction.
External filters require the same maintenance but are accessed in different ways. Most have a removable top which when removed will give you access to the media.
Finally treat sufficient water with de-chlorinator and re-fill your aquarium. Once filled to the desired level turn the filter back on.
